LOGISTICS & TRANSPORT / CUSTOM ENGINEERING

Last-Mile Delivery & Driver Apps

Coordinate final-mile deliveries with driver mobile workflows, proof of delivery, customer status visibility and exception queues.

What problem does this software solve?

Paper manifests and phone calls obscure attempted deliveries, failed addresses and returned parcels. Drivers often operate through intermittent networks and do not have time to complete complicated forms.

1. Understand the workflow before proposing a system

Observe pickup, loading, route assignment and drop-off; classify failure reasons; confirm which proof is necessary; decide when customers should receive notifications. We document current tools, actors, business rules, edge cases, decision ownership and constraints before estimating a build.

Who the system serves

  • Drivers
  • Dispatchers
  • Customer support teams

2. Product workflows and screens we can build

The first release should support one complete business journey with clear ownership and error handling. The final feature set is agreed through discovery rather than sold as a fixed checklist.

  • Daily job list and route progression on a mobile device
  • Offline capture of delivery status, photos or signatures as approved
  • Failed delivery reasons, reattempts and return-to-sender workflows
  • Customer tracking links and exception notifications

3. Architecture, data models and system boundaries

A mobile client stores pending actions locally and syncs idempotent events to a job service. Status events update a shipment timeline; notification delivery is asynchronous so a third-party outage does not block driver actions. Technology decisions follow transaction volume, latency, security, integration complexity and the skills available for maintenance. Where practical, a modular application starts simpler than many independent services.

4. External systems and integration strategy

We inspect access rules and data ownership before promising integrations. API limits, provider plan features, asynchronous delivery and failure recovery are documented in the design.

  • Order-management systems
  • Maps and routing APIs
  • SMS or email notification providers

5. Testing, access controls and operational safeguards

Authorization, audit records, data validation, observability and recovery planning form part of the delivery scope. Each critical flow is tested for failures and inconsistent external data, not just the happy path.

  • Offline conflict handling and duplicate event detection
  • Restricted access to delivery evidence
  • Retention policies for photos, signatures and locations

6. How we move from discovery to deployment

We split delivery into reviewable milestones with working demonstrations, acceptance checks, clear change decisions and a handover plan.

  1. Prototype driver task completion
  2. Test offline delivery evidence and synchronization
  3. Connect dispatcher dashboard and customer updates

7. Decide whether the solution is worth building

Start with one route or depot to validate driver ergonomics before committing to a full dispatch replacement. During scoping, establish a baseline and decide how the business will measure improvement after launch.

Metrics to agree up front

  • First-attempt delivery rate
  • Time from drop-off to visible confirmation
  • Support requests per shipment
